The landscape is integral to the design, extending beyond the central garden to include a putting green, pétanque court and a series of more intimate planted spaces. The house is organised around a series of connected indoor and outdoor spaces. Generous glazing draws light deep into the plan, while terraces, balconies and pergolas extend the living areas outward and create a variety of sheltered spaces for different times of day. The pool and entertainment terrace form a central focus, with the surrounding rooms maintaining a strong visual connection to both the garden and the broader landscape.

A composition of pitched roofs references the more traditional forms of the Paarl and Winelands context, while large glazed openings, deep horizontal slabs and lightweight pergola structures give the house a distinctly contemporary character. Natural stone is used to anchor the building to the site, contrasted against lighter rendered walls, dark roofs and finely detailed aluminium elements.

The result is a contemporary Winelands home that balances solidity and transparency, using the site’s topography as an opportunity to create a sequence of elevated, light-filled spaces with a strong connection to outdoor living.

The design was developed as a direct response to the orientation of the site and the local climatic conditions. Living and entertainment areas are positioned to maximise northern light and extend naturally towards the outdoor living spaces, while deep overhangs, cantilevered slabs and adjustable screening elements provide protection from the harsh western sun. The arrangement of the building and external spaces also creates sheltered areas protected from the prevailing south-easterly winds.

A key consideration was balancing openness with privacy. A stone-clad entrance wall creates a deliberately more enclosed arrival from the street, while the house progressively opens towards the garden, pool and surrounding views. On the upper level, the main suite is set back from the building edge to create a private balcony, with integrated planting and screening used to soften the architecture and provide additional privacy.

Architecturally, the house is expressed through a composition of strong horizontal roof planes, cantilevered forms and carefully positioned screens. Stone, timber and extensive glazing introduce warmth and texture while contrasting the solidity of the primary building forms with lighter, more transparent elements. The result is a contemporary home that responds to its environment while maintaining a simple and timeless architectural language.

Sustainability was considered as an integral part of the design, combining passive solar principles, natural cross-ventilation and solar control with energy-efficient glazing, solar power, rainwater harvesting and an integrated heating and cooling system.

The resolution, orientating the building along the east west axis. By doing so most of the interior spaces will have direct northern light. To achieve this within the development restrictions of the estate the building was broken into parts and grouped according to functions.

The living spaces form the heart of the home, and the kitchen dining and entertainment spaces are grouped in the centre of the site, above these are the three bedrooms connected by a feature staircase. Leading off this central space is the study space to the north, the entertainment spaces to the west, the garage and entrance spaces to the east and lastly the outside pool and seating area to the south.

The design looks to articulate each of these spaces, as separate spaces, yet connected. This is an important approach to achieving a homely feeling to the building, and not an intimidating mass of a building. To do this, each space is founded under its own main slate roof, connected with contrasting concrete roofs over the linking passages. As a result, the structure is experienced as connected parts instead of an overwhelming whole.

To further soften the edges of the building, and control the climate around the house, extensive pergolas are used to shade openings, and surfaces surrounding entrances. The pool and adjacent seating area are visually invited into the house, with extensive glass doors and windows allowing a visual connection to these spaces from most of the interior areas.

Inspired by the view of the Simonsberg mountain range, the design aims to frame this landscape as part of connecting the home and its residents to their surroundings. The mountain range being a geographical landmark, acts as a subtle reminder as to where you are situated, reinforcing the connection to home. To ensure this connection is maximised, the orientation of the building was designed to allows for views to the mountain from all the upper bedroom spaces and many of the lower-level spaces.

To protect the outside entertainment areas from the prevailing harsh south eastern winds, the building was designed to form a large courtyard like area around the pool.

Located on a steep slope, the existing house is surrounded by thick vegetation and established trees, the site is characterised by the complete dominance of vegetation over the structure. The client’s brief was to construct a new home, which would still be well positioned within the sites natural context without destroying the surrounds.

The current house suffers from extensive water damage and persistent damp and water problems. The house is also outdated and does not cater for the needs of the owners anymore. As a result, the decision was made to demolish the old house and design a new one. The brief called for the house to reinforce the connection between the beautiful landscape and the interior of the home, provide more living space as required, prioritise sustainability and good environmental principles and finally to positions the building sensitively within the landscape.

To minimize the impact any new structure would have on the established vegetation on site, the design rooted itself around the conceptual approach of sticking as close as possible to the open areas which would be left behind once the existing building has been demolished.

This proved to be a challenge as the new brief required more space than in the original home. As a result, the building is split into three parts, the entrance space, the living spaces, the private spaces. These three main spaces are then stepped along the site to create two distinct wings of the home, each located in existing open space on site. These wings are then linked by the entrance space. The building is set into the site, lowering the height of the building. The scale is further stepped down by the porch roof, allowing the building to sit unimposing on the site.

The existing house was plagued by inadequate light and ventilation creating problems with damp and mould. As a result, the owners requested that the spaces are naturally well lit and ventilated. To achieve this a deck was introduced around the house, allowing for large openable glass doors to breath fresh air and light into the spaces.

The project will incorporate contemporary sustainable technologies such as geothermal heating, rainwater harvesting and solar power generation on site.

The design response was informed by the homeowner being an avid car enthusiast and classic car collector, and a major component of the brief was to provide a space for these vehicles to be showcased and easily maintained. The result was a brief with two main functions, a home, and a space for the owner’s car collection. The major challenge being to create a design which responds to the brief while addressing the contextual concerns.

The resulting design approach was to create livable courtyard spaces. These courtyards were designed to be sheltered from the harsh western sun, and strong seasonal winds in the area. By splitting the built structures into smaller structures, it will allow these structures to define the edges of the courtyard while being flexible within the sites restricted buildable area.

The design made use of simple forms, inspired by traditional cape architecture. These forms are articulated with simple windows and doors to break the scale of the façade down. The common living spaces in the home are grouped around the courtyard space, to allow the inside spaces to connect to the outside. Allowing the inside spaces to flow into the outside courtyard space. In contrast private spaces are located upstairs to provide privacy while maximizing views of the Simonsberg mountains.

Although challenging, housing the owner’s car collection, the building is inspired by a traditional horse stable and features large sliding stable like doors. As with the main house the building is laid out to create a sheltered space between the two wings.
